FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
It all depends on you. Factors like your aesthetic style, personal preference, which room you’re tiling, and the type of durability you’re looking for will all impact the type of material you choose for your floors. The most common choices for tile floors are porcelain and ceramic tiles due to their diverse applications, durability, and modest cost.
Porcelain. There’s a common misconception that porcelain is a delicate material due to its use in fine China and dolls. However, porcelain tiles are one of the toughest types of tiles. They are extremely durable, resistant to water damage, and can come in a wide variety of styles and textures.
Floor tiles are designed to be thicker and sturdier than wall tiles to accommodate for the additional wear and tear that comes from foot traffic. Wall tiles are made thinner and lighter for easier installation. Floor tiles can be used for wall applications, but wall tiles should never be used for flooring.
The PEI scale (Porcelain Enamel Institute) is a rating hierarchy that sorts different types of tiles by their durability and hardness. It helps consumers decide on what type of tiles to buy for various applications, like backsplash tiles or floor tiles.
The rating is determined by using a machine that measures abrasion resistance. The scale ranges from a PEI rating of 0 to a PEI of 5, 5 being the hardest and most durable type of tile, typically used in commercial applications. Contact our team of tiling experts to learn more about the PEI scale to help find the right type of tiles for your next project!
Porcelain is a type of ceramic tile. Porcelain clay is fired at an extremely high temperature and the final product is incredibly dense, strong, and durable. The average PEI rating of porcelain is 5.
Non porcelain ceramic tiles will typically made from red and white clays. They don’t require as high of a temperature and aren’t nearly as durable or moisture resistant. The average PEI rating of non-porcelain ceramic tiles is ~0.3.
Unglazed – Unglazed tiles have no extra finish added to them after firing. They will typically look more natural and aren’t as water resistant. They do require more maintenance than other types of finishes.
Glazed – A glaze is kind of like the finishing touch for your tiles. It acts as a layer of protection against stains and moisture. Most ceramic tiles are glazed. Keep in mind that glazed tiles tend to be a bit more slippery and might require a textured tile for better grip.
Polished – Polished tiles are ground to look just like marble and granite. The polish top coat protects your tiles from dirt and debris. The glossy finish will also create a “glass-like” appearance.
